The estimated number of Transnistria’s population constituted 533.5
thousand people by the beginning of 2008 – by 7.1 thousand less than a
year ago.
According to the preliminary data by the Transnistrian
Ministry of Economy, 4.89 thousand of newly born were registered in
Transnistria in 2007, the number of the deceased was by 40% more –
8.13 thousand people.
The main death reasons remain heart
ischemia, tumors, vascular cerebral lesions, which caused more than a
half of the total number of deaths. Sixty babies under one year died as
well – by four more than in 2006.
The migration decrease
constituted 3830 people. About 7 thousand people arrived to
Transnistria, 16.7% of them – children. Almost 11 thousand of
Transnistrians (13.6% of children among them) left Transnistria to
settle down in new places.
In 1989 about 750 thousand people
lived in Transnistria. According to the population census of the
unrecognized Transnistrian Moldovan Republic in November 2004 its
population constituted 555.5 thousand people.
