The European Union stands ready to provide substantial assistance to
the projects to be worked out jointly by the Chisinau and Tiraspol
working groups on confidence-building measures, European Union Special
Representative (EUSR) for Moldova Kalman Mizsei stated during his
meeting with Transnistrian leader Igor Smirnov here Wednesday.
According
to the Transnistrian presidential press service, Kalman Mizsei said the
assistance would be advantageous to both sides economically as well as
politically, and will create a good environment for a political
settlement of the Transnistrian dispute.
The EUSR stressed
the European Union welcomes the meeting between the Moldovan and
Transnistrian presidents that was held in Bendery last Friday after a
7-year-long pause, and highly appreciated the good atmosphere of the
meeting. He also assessed positively the seminar and 5+2 format meeting
held in Odessa (Ukraine) last Monday and Tuesday.
Kalman
Mizsei said the trust measures, which the sides have just started to
build again, can create very favorable conditions for further work.
Wednesday,
Igor Smirnov held a meeting also with Russian Ambassador Extraordinary
and Plenipotentiary to Moldova Valery Kuzmin, and discussed with him
the new situation developing in the Moldova-Transnistria settlement and
questions of bilateral cooperation between Russia and Transnistria.
