Lack of tangible results in the activities of the Chisinau/Tiraspol
working groups on confidence-building measures (CBMs) is causing
concern, agreed Moldovan Minister of Reintegration Vasile Sova and the
Head of the OSCE Mission to Moldova, Ambassador Philip Remler at their
meeting here Wednesday.
According to the Ministry of
Reintegration, Vasile Sova and Philip Remler “stressed the need for
imparting an extra impulse to the groups’ work in order to enhance the
realization of joint projects needed by the residents of both Dniester
banks”.
The initiative to create such joint expert working
groups was put forward by Moldovan President Vladimir Voronin in late
2007. And on April 11, 2008 he met with Transnistrian leader Igor
Smirnov in Bendery city, after a 7-year-long break. Very shortly after
that meeting, the joint groups held several working meetings on the
problems of environment protection, railroad communication and social
problems, but the meetings did not give any result.
